About Caryl Hughes

Award-winning Welsh soprano Caryl Hughes performs widely on the operatic and concert platforms in Britain and internationally. Described as a “tour de force” (Opera Magazine) and “captivating delight” (reviewsgate.com), she has received high acclaim for her work as a singing actress. This season saw her perform in the world-premiere of Y Tŵr for Music Theatre Wales.

Caryl trained at the Royal Academy of Music on the Postgraduate Vocal Studies and Opera course. She went on to study at the Cardiff International Academy of Voice. She has been awarded the prestigious W. Towyn Roberts prize at the National Eisteddfod as well as the Stuart Burrows International Voice Award. She was a finalist in the Welsh Singers Competition in 2006 and the Les Azuriales International Singing Competition in 2010.

Operatic roles include Cenerentola and Varvara (Katya Kabanova) for Scottish Opera, Teti (Le nozze di Teti e di Peleo) with Carlo Rizzi for Welsh National Opera, Tiny (Paul Bunyan), Papagena and Rita Rat (Fantastic Mr Fox) for English Touring Opera, First Nymph (Rusalka) for Grange Park Opera, Cherubino and Dorabella for Diva Opera, Mercedes (Carmen) for Llangollen International Festival and Flora (The Enchanted Pig) for Young Vic Theatre / The Opera Group. In music theatre, she has performed the roles of Maria (West Side Story) and Cosette (Les Misérables) for Pimlico Opera.

Career highlights include singing in concert with Bryn Terfel for Raymond Gubbay, Grange Park Opera and the Hay Festival. Having performed Britten’s Cabaret Songs at the Aix-en-Provence and Aldeburgh Festivals in 2009, Caryl later released them on disc with Malcolm Martineau.

 

Away from the stage, Caryl enjoys escaping to the North Wales coast for long windswept walks. She lives in London with her fiancé and young son.
